Dentures & Their Types

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums created to replace missing natural teeth. They can be made from plastic, ceramic, or metal.

Dentures are divided into two types: fixed dentures and removable dentures.

  1. Examples of fixed dentures include dental implants and dental bridges.
  2. Examples of removable dentures include acrylic (plastic-based) dentures, metal-based dentures, and full-mouth dentures.

The benefits of wearing dentures include:

  • Making it easier to chew food
  • Restoring appearance, confidence, and personality lost due to missing teeth
  • Improving speech clarity
  • Preventing adjacent teeth from tilting or shifting
  • Preventing significant bone loss in the tooth socket and jawbone, which can occur within 4–5 years after tooth loss

Full vs Partial Dentures

When getting dentures—whether full dentures or partial dentures—the dentist will recommend the most suitable type for your situation.

If only a few teeth are missing, fixed dentures such as dental implants or dental bridges are usually recommended. These days, dental implants have more advantages than bridges, as they do not require grinding down adjacent teeth and are more affordable than bridges. For this reason, Wise Dental Clinic generally recommends implants, except in cases where there is insufficient bone for implantation—in which case, a bridge becomes another viable option.

If many teeth are missing, removable dentures may be more appropriate. However, if you prefer fixed dentures instead of removable ones, it is still possible, though the treatment process will be more complex.

Fixed vs Removal

The differences between fixed and removable dentures are as follows:

  • Fixed dentures are more expensive and involve a more complex treatment process compared to removable dentures.
  • Removable dentures require more time to adjust to when it comes to chewing, speaking, and the overall feeling in the mouth.
  • Fixed dentures are easier to keep clean than removable dentures.
  • Fixed dentures generally have a longer lifespan than removable dentures, although this depends on the materials used—metal is more durable than plastic.

How To Fix Loosen Dentures?

A common problem with removable dentures is that they can become loose and shift while chewing, which can cause discomfort and reduce confidence when speaking or smiling. Chewing may also become less efficient.

Placing 2–4 dental implants can greatly improve the stability of the dentures. This solution is ideal for patients who have lost many teeth and may already have removable dentures that feel loose. The new dentures will still be removable, making them easy to clean as before, but they will gain added strength and stability from the implants—allowing you to speak, smile, and chew with confidence.
