Why Do You Need Jaw Surgery Along With Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment can only correct misalignment of the teeth, but it cannot fix abnormalities in the positioning of the upper and lower jaws. Conditions such as a protruding chin, asymmetrical face, upper jaw protrusion, or excessive gum display when smiling require a combined treatment called orthodontics with orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery).

Jaw surgery is a highly complex procedure that requires general anesthesia and must be performed by a specialist surgeon in collaboration with a hospital that meets high-quality standards to ensure the safest and most effective treatment for patients.

At Wise Dental Clinic, Dr. Surat Saengjinda, a specialist in jaw and facial surgery and a faculty member of the Department of Oral Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry, Naresuan University, provides patient consultations and performs surgeries at Bangkok Hospital Phitsanulok.

Treatment Phases

The treatment can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Pre-surgical Orthodontics: In many cases, patients need to undergo orthodontic treatment before jaw surgery. This helps align the teeth and face properly, ensuring the position and angle of the teeth become normal.
  2. Jaw Surgery: After the initial orthodontic treatment, jaw surgery is performed to reposition one or both jaws into the correct and optimal alignment. The number of jaws operated on depends on the treatment plan. Following surgery, the patient enters the recovery phase and must follow medical advice carefully—such as eating soft foods initially, avoiding strenuous exercise, and other care instructions. More detailed information about jaw surgery and recovery can be provided.
  3. Post-surgical Orthodontics: Once the surgery is complete and the bones have healed sufficiently, orthodontic treatment resumes to finalize the alignment, ensuring proper bite and facial symmetry.
